01  Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA)

Korean art, just a few steps from Deoksugung Palace.

The Seosomun Main Branch of the Seoul Museum of Art sits in Jeong-dong, a neighborhood layered with traces of Seoul’s modern history. The historic facade of the former Supreme Court is integrated with the contemporary museum building, making the architecture part of the visit itself.

Inside, the museum spans Korean modern masters and contemporary art. With a lobby, art shop, café, and outdoor sculpture area, it is an easy stop to add to a walk around Deoksugung Palace or Jeongdong-gil.

Address: 61, Deoksugung-gil, Jung-gu, Seoul

1. Yoo Youngkuk: A Mountain Within Me

May 19 – October 25, 2026 · Free admission

A major exhibition devoted to Yoo Youngkuk, a pioneer of Korean abstraction. His bold colors and geometric interpretations of mountains and nature offer an immediate way into an important current of Korean modern art.

2. AMOR EX MACHINA

April 30 – September 6, 2026

Marking the 20th anniversary of SeMA Nanji Residency, this exhibition brings together installation, video, new media, and performance to explore how technology is reshaping relationships, care, and contemporary life.

02  Culture Station Seoul 284

Step inside Seoul Station from 100 years ago.

Before today’s glass-and-steel Seoul Station, this was one of the city’s main railway gateways. Completed in 1925, the former station has been restored as Culture Station Seoul 284, a cultural venue where architecture, history, exhibitions, and public programs come together.

The central hall, waiting rooms, stationmaster’s office, and former dining spaces still carry traces of the station’s past, offering a glimpse into how people once traveled through Seoul. It is especially rewarding for visitors interested in architecture and modern Korean history.

Address: 1, Tongil-ro, Jung-gu, Seoul

Seoul Station 2026: Where Memory Meets Movement

June 11 – August 17, 2026 · Free admission

This railway culture exhibition reimagines the former station through archives, artworks, railway objects, reconstructed spaces, and installations. Following themes of departure, waiting, movement, boarding, and arrival, the act of walking through the building becomes part of the exhibition itself.

*Before you visit: Closed on Mondays, except for the final exhibition day, August 17, 2026. Opening hours are 10:00–18:00, with last admission at 17:30.

03  Futura Seoul

A futuristic art space in the heart of historic Bukchon.

Set among Bukchon’s hanok-lined streets, Futura Seoul creates a striking contrast between one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods and contemporary architecture. Light, nature, and structure shape the experience, while a long-established garden adds another layer to the building’s character.

The building received the Grand Prize at the 43rd Seoul Architecture Awards in 2025. Even without an exhibition, the architecture alone makes it worth a stop: a place where Seoul’s past, present, and future seem to meet.

Address: 61, Bukchon-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul

3rd Poem: Es Devlin, Come Home Again

August 20, 2026 – January 17, 2027 · Upcoming

British artist and stage designer Es Devlin is known for immersive environments that combine sculpture, performance, music, drawing, language, and light. From large-scale installations at major cultural institutions to stage projects for globally known musicians, her wide-ranging practice comes to Seoul as an expansive spatial experience.

*Before you visit: The exhibition opens on August 20, 2026. Check Futura Seoul’s official website for the latest admission and reservation information.

04  Kukje Gallery

World-class contemporary art in the heart of Samcheong-dong.

Founded in 1982, Kukje Gallery has played an important role in connecting Korean contemporary art with the wider international art world. Its Seoul spaces — K1, K2, K3, and Hanok — are clustered in Samcheong-dong, close to Gyeongbokgung Palace and Bukchon.

Alongside introducing major international artists to Korean audiences, the gallery has consistently presented leading Korean artists, including key figures associated with Dansaekhwa. It is an easy contemporary-art stop to add to a day of palaces, hanok streets, and nearby museums.

Address: 54, Samcheong-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul

1. Park Seo-Bo: Changing Unchanging

August 24 – October 18, 2026 · Upcoming

Park Seo-Bo is one of the defining figures of Dansaekhwa, the Korean monochrome movement. Built through repetition, material, and a highly physical process, his works offer an excellent entry point into one of the most influential currents in postwar Korean art.

2. Seeun Kim: Pictos and Pitwall

August 24 – October 18, 2026 · Upcoming

Seeun Kim draws visual cues from architecture, infrastructure, and everyday spaces encountered while moving through the city, then reconstructs them through painting. Familiar cityscapes become fluid and slightly unfamiliar, inviting us to look at the urban environment with fresh eyes.

*Before you visit: Both exhibitions open on August 24, 2026. The previous Seoul exhibitions ended on July 19, so visitors in mid-August should check the current exhibition status before making a dedicated trip.

05  Seoul Museum of Craft Art (SeMoCA)

Discover Korea through the art of craft.

SeMoCA is Korea’s first public museum dedicated to craft. Built on the historic site of Andong Royal Palace, it brings together traditional craft, materials, contemporary creativity, and the layered history of the place itself.

Located between Bukchon and Insadong, it fits easily into a central Seoul itinerary. Here, craft is presented not simply as decoration, but as a culture shaped by materials, techniques, makers, and the stories of their time.

Address: 4, Yulgok-ro 3-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul

1. Andong Royal Palace, Layers of Time

April 28, 2026 – August 29, 2027 · Exhibition Building 3

Presented on the very site where Andong Royal Palace once stood, this exhibition explores memories of the palace and Korea’s transition from the Joseon Dynasty to the Korean Empire through craft objects and historical traces. The close connection between place and object makes the history especially vivid for international visitors.

2. Lacquer: From Lacquer Tree to Lacquerware

June 27, 2025 – December 31, 2026 · Exhibition Building 2

Follow the journey of natural lacquer from the lacquer tree to finished lacquerware. Through harvesting, processing, production techniques, and research materials, the exhibition offers a closer look at the materials and craftsmanship behind Korea’s lacquer tradition.

*Before you visit: Exhibition Buildings 1 and 2 are temporarily closed from August 4–23, 2026 for exhibition changes. Exhibition Building 3 and the Information Building remain open. During this period, “Lacquer: From Lacquer Tree to Lacquerware” in Exhibition Building 2 is not available to view.

Before You Go

Exhibition dates, opening hours, admission policies, and temporary closures may change. For a smoother visit, check each venue’s official website on the day you go. In particular, the featured exhibitions at Futura Seoul and Kukje Gallery open later in August, while parts of SeMoCA are temporarily closed.

Connect Seoul’s Art in a Day

These five spaces reveal very different sides of Seoul: Korean modern abstraction, a century-old railway station, award-winning contemporary architecture, an internationally connected gallery scene, and craft rooted in royal history. Choose one as your destination, or connect several as you move through Jeong-dong, Seoul Station, Bukchon, Samcheong-dong, and Insadong.
